The Gilford High School student sustained a head injury after skiing off-trail and hitting rocks and trees.
A New Hampshire teen died following a head injury sustained in a skiing accident Monday, The Laconia Daily Sun reported.
Witnesses said Gilford High School freshman Sydnie Quimby, 15, skied off the Derringer trail at Gunstock Mountain Resort, hitting rocks and trees, Gunstock President and General Manager Tom Day said in a statement obtained by the Daily Sun.
She appeared to be wearing a helmet at the time, the newspaper reported. Boston.com has reached out to Gunstock for comment.
“She was initially comforted by some of the skiing public until Gunstock Ski Patrol arrived at the scene shortly thereafter,” Day said, according to the Daily Sun. “The young lady was transported to the base area where the Gilford Fire Department ambulance was waiting.”
Gilford Fire Chief Steve Carrier told Boston.com his team was dispatched to Gunstock at 12:11 p.m. Monday for a reported head injury. First responders transported the patient to Concord Hospital – Laconia with serious injuries, he said.
Gilford High School Principal Anthony Sperazzo notified members of the school community Tuesday morning, WMUR reported.
“This is a sad loss for our community,” Sperazzo wrote in his message, according to WMUR. “We are working diligently to support our students, staff, and families.”
Sperazzo did not return a request for comment.
Quimby was a member of the New England Six Shooters and participated in horseback mounted shooting, according to the Daily Sun. Molly Slombo, the club’s executive director, told the newspaper Quimby was hardworking and fearless.
“She broke her collarbone last year, but she still showed up to weekly practices to ride even though she could barely hold her arm up with a gun,” Slombo told the Daily Sun. “She was just dedicated.”
A GoFundMe fundraiser to cover Quimby’s funeral expenses surpassed its $15,000 goal shortly after its launch Tuesday afternoon.
